Education
Every child in the state of Utah deserves the option of having a quality public education. A sad fact is Utah is still the last in the nation in per pupil spending. Although funding is lacking, our children continue to excel. . Imagine if the legislature would adequately fund our schools and stop wasting tax dollars on politically driven issues like private school vouchers.
In this day and age every person should have the opportunity to attend a higher education establishment that is affordable. The state of Utah should place higher education especially community colleges as a priority in the states budget. As time passes the needed for nurses, teachers, and other fields requiring math and science degree’s continue to increase. So should the incentives, access, and affordability to those programs.
Health Care
Probably one the hottest debated topic of this year is the health care crisis our states as well as others are facing. While 300,000 Utahans’ go with out insurance, it is paramount we make sure there are no children left without he proper care they deserve. The C.H.I.P program needs to continue being funded at 100% and even expanded to include additional children. .
It’s not governments role is force people to buy health insurance as much as it to enable people to have affordable access to health insurance. If the government is going to regulate anyone it should be the health care industry. They should regulate the exploding health care cost. We should put the health care decisions back in the hands of the patient and their doctors. Stop allowing insurance companies to have the ability to dictate what appropriate care is and what is not. .
I believe it is the responsibility of employers to offer affordable health insurance to their employees. If an employer is unable to provide healthcare to their employees the state and federal government should step up and provide adequate affordable health care for those individuals or families.
Illegal Immigration
I am all for legal immigration; the United States of America was founded on this principal and would not be the extraordinarily diverse country we all know and love with out legal immigration.
There are some issues in Utah when it comes to illegal immigration. There is no easy solution to this problem and we shouldn’t rush into knee jerk reactions solutions. With that said something needs to be done at the state level. I am excited about the legislature’s decision to create an immigration task force to study and come up with solid solutions to Utah’s illegal immigration problem.
Illegal immigration is a problem that is best dealt with on the federal level. I do think states can help or assist in the process but they should not be making policy because of their inability to fund and follow through on enforcement.
One thing I think the state should explore is eliminating the funding sources for illegal immigrants. Employers should be penalized criminally and financially for knowingly employing illegal immigrants.
Public safety
I have served Salt Lake County’s West side Community for seven years as a Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff. I believe protecting people’s rights and ensuring our family’s have a safe place to live, work, and raise our families are essential.
I am committed to protecting the community as a law enforcement official and will continue protecting our community as the next Representative of District 32 in the Legislature. I will accomplish these goals by supporting legislation that works to prevent crime and makes criminals pay for the crimes they have committed. I will support alternatives to incarceration for non-violent criminals and will support programs designed to help drug offenders with treatment for their addictions. I will continue working with State and local officials to keep our streets safe from crime and illegal activity.
Senior and Aging Services
I will always fight for human services and one of the most important of human services is senior and aging services. I would like to see the many seniors that are on fixed incomes feel safe and secure. I will support programs that help seniors maintain independence as long as they can. If seniors are not able to be fully independent I would like to help them keep their personal dignity intact while affording them the best possible care.
Seniors are one of the biggest targets for criminal activity specifically financial crimes and person crimes. I will support legislation that stiffens the penalty for crimes committed against seniors.
